Design Contract Approved for First-Ever County Indoor Recreation Facility
After Commissioners approved a resolution at the August 18 meeting, Buncombe County Parks & Recreation is moving forward with a $1,599,220 design contract with Method Studio for a first-of-its-kind County indoor recreation facility at Buncombe County Sports Park.
The Comprehensive Facility Plan, the Parks & Recreation Master Plan feedback, and the FY27 Capital Improvement Plan all pointed to a need for an indoor recreation space. The space’s proposed amenities include basketball and volleyball courts, locker rooms, a catering kitchen, multipurpose spaces suitable for hosting community events or polling sites, conference rooms, and office space for Parks & Recreation staff. In addition to efficiency standards and solar power, this design concept could also allow for additional entrances or exits from the park, relieving some traffic burden during busy periods. A new indoor recreation space could also expand the park’s ability to support community emergency operations and response.
The initial recommended project location is adjacent to the Sand Hill Community Garden, a tree nursery by Asheville GreenWorks, Field 9, and the dog park. However, the project is in its preliminary planning stages, and the facility has not yet been designed or fully scoped. Now that a design contract has been approved, Parks & Recreation will work with all stakeholders to address needs and determine how we can continue to support amenities that may be impacted.
The timeline for beginning any construction at the site is projected to be mid 2028. As the process moves forward, the team will engage with community partners to address concerns, identify needs, and explore opportunities for the space.
